⛵️Sailing weather! 5–15 kt — a great breeze to sail in.
🛟Getting strong 16–23 kt — be careful out there.
🌪️Too windy 24–30 kt — best to wait.
☠️Stay ashore 31+ kt — too wild to sail.

Where’s this from?

The wind comes from St Kilda Harbour — the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS) station out on the bay — because there’s no wind station on Albert Park Lake itself. The air temperature comes from Melbourne (Olympic Park), the nearest thermometer to the lake.

Why St Kilda?

St Kilda is the closest station to the lake — just a little way toward the sea, down to the south-east. It feels the fresh wind off the bay before it reaches us, so it’s a good sneak peek at the wind coming our way — especially a cool change from the south.

We keep the wind direction simple — one of eight main points: North, North-East, East, South-East, South, South-West, West and North-West.

The wind picture gets a fresh check about every ten minutes, so the “updated” time counts up to around ten or fifteen minutes and then starts again — that’s normal.

Wind from the Bureau of Meteorology at St Kilda Harbour. Always ask a grown-up and check the water before you sail.
